A suggestion - allow the user to define an age rule for each folder - all within the bounds of the installation defined age limits.
For example I have a folder where I route messages that are system alerts. After 7 days I no longer need them as an official ticket would have been opened or the issue resolved.

This functionality has been available since at least version 6.5 as part of the archiving feature.
You can create an Archive Criteria Settings where you choose the option "Just clean up this database without archiving."instead of the default “Copy old documents into my archive database, then clean up this database”. Then set your selection criteria to Not Modified for 7 days, and select Only In These Views or Folders and pick the folder you wish to automatically clean up.

I’ve not used archive - dislike it after some bad experiences in the past. I’ve set my local replica to not accept deletes from the server so my local is complete.
