Strange Notes launch behaviour

Hi,

I’ve been having very odd Notes-launching behaviour…and I’m hoping that someone can shed some light on what’s happening.

I launch Notes.exe

  • I get the splash screen, and I see notes.exe and nlnotes.exe running in task manager

  • after 30-40 seconds, splash screen disappears and notes.exe disappears

  • nlnotes continues to run for 3-4 mins, and the Memory Usage for that process grows and grows till it’s 50-60MB

  • the notes client lauches

once I start using Notes, the mem usage of nlnotes.exe usually drops drastically to ~10MB…and as I use it it climbs back up to 20-30MB of RAM.

I’m trying to figure out what Notes is doing during the launch…I’ve turned off all subscriptions, I’m not using Page Minder, my Index is up to date, and I’m not replicating anything.

Any ideas?!?

Hi Dan,

Does it do this everytime you launch the Notes client or only after a crash? I don’t know exactly what is happening, but it could be some things dealing with your cache and desktop files. There may be some structural validation going on with those databases (OSD)… I’m sure there are some tech’s out here that can provide the details of the startup for the Notes client.

Hi Chuck,

It was doing it every time I restarted Notes for a couple of days, but today seems to be normal (maybe it just needed the weekend to think about things!)

I think this all started when I had a crash that required me to delete my Cache, Desktop, and Bookmarks. Also, I noticed that during the launch it often seemed to be running some kind of a check on perweb.nsf - although I’m not using the Notes browser.

Anyway, as I say, it seems to be better now, so I’ll just pretend it didn’t happen - oh, and hope that it doesn’t happen to other users! (as long as it’s just IT staff, it’s not really a problem!)
