When setting up a roaming user, you have the option to “Store user id file in personal address book.”
My question is this, should a computer crash and lotus notes is irrepairable, is there someway you can extract the id file from the personal address book in the personal address book in the roaming folder on the mail server? Otherwise what is the purpose?

The purpose is to provide the roaming user his ID file. Otherwise you’d have to store it on a floppy or a network share accessible by the user and he’d have to specify the ID location.
The ID file in the PAB is double-encrypted, so you cannot extract a copy from there.

Thanks for the reply. Followup question: What happens in this concept when an end user doesn’t recertify the id before it expires, what then are we to recerify should they be in a remote location for example?

Sorry for the late response. Haven’t been on the forum very much these days.
An expired ID can simply be recertified through the Domino Directory. The next time the user connects to the server, his local ID file will be updated with the new certification info. When he quits his Notes client, he’ll be prompted to replicate his roaming files, which will update the ID stored in the PAB of his roaming server if the user chooses to replicate.
