Stand Alone mail Client / POP3

I am trying to use my bellsouth ISP to send and receive mail via my notes client. Receiving POP3 mail works perfectly but sending via SMTP does not. It worked once or twice but that has been it. I have used help and followed the instructions step by step. I have added SMTPClientDebug=1 andSMTPTimeoutMultiplier=1000. Problem is my log I see no transfer of mail… I have read almost every post in this forum on SMTP and stand alone clients to no avail…

Any help would be appreciated,

I get/send my Bellsouth mail with Notes. The setup/configuration was NOT straight-forward. It seems I emptied my NOTES.INI a few times and let the install wizard prompt me with all the questions about server connections, creating accounts, etc. As I recall, one of the gotchas had to do with the account docs in the local nab. I’ll glance when I get home to see if I can remember any other tips. I have my home PC set to send/receive from multiple Bellsouth accounts. This is done by using a separate account for each location document. It was a real pain to setup but now that it works, it is a lot better than using software highly susceptible to viruses. :slight_smile: Good luck.

Thanks Doug,It’s heartening to know that someone has this puppy licked. I can tell you that one of the differrences in your setup maybe that you received a generic user.id when configuring the client for the first time and choose an ISP setup instead of a Notes Client/Server setup. I set my default configuration to connect to a Notes server then I created the different location and Account documents for connecting to my ISP. So Notes did not create me a generic user.id like it did when I tried this in R5. Wonder if that could be the problem??? Basically when I switch locations I am still using my user.id that was created from the Notes server at work…

I am using my ID from work but I went through the setup on my home PC as if I was using ISP mail rather than a Domino server. I could figure out how to make it hit my Domino server but the wizard helped me get the ISP stuff working. Might be worth a try.

I get ISP email directly to/from the 6.5 Notes client all the time. One thing I noticed, though, was that when trying to send to one ISP’s SMTP server while connected via another ISP’s network, it wouldn’t work. This, even though I had username and password set for the SMTP account, as required by the ISP whose SMTP I was trying to use. I guess it is common for ISPs to disallow all port 25 traffic that is directed off their network. That way, their customers can’t send spam to open relays. I was able to get around this restriction by setting the port in my SMTP account document to 26.

Hi Christopher,

Just wondering, you mentioned in one of these threads that you “changed the location docs”. Under the “Mail” tab, have you changed the bell-south location so that mail is sent “Directly to Internet”, rather than “Through domino server”?

I’m only asking since you mentioned an ID file from your corporate network.

This change would be my guess, since you mentioned you can receive (POP), but not send (SMTP).
