Spell Check dialog invisible

I have encountered a problem running Notes 8.5.1 (full client w/ admin and designer) on Windows 7 x64 (both before and after FP1 install). When I run the spell check, either manually or otherwise, the spell check window disappears behind the main panel of my Notes client. I have co-workers who are using Windows 7 x64 as well who are not having this problem. I have looked around for reports of similar issues but have found none.

The spell check dialog, being modal, has UI focus. This makes it appear as if my Notes client is frozen as the spell checker is not visible. I can use the keyboard shortcuts, tab, enter, etc, to skip through the spell check dialog (or more often, screw things up for myself) until it goes away, but it is annoying. I have applications that run the spell check on save as well as multiple locations where the policies require spell checking upon sending an email, so I cannot really just ignore the issue.

My current Notes installation was done on a fresh Windows 7 x64 system, with a copy of my data folder that I have been trucking around since v 6.5.4 through 7.x, 8.x and now 8.5.x.

Anyone have any suggestions? Input is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Paul

Subject: Re: Spell Check dialog invisible, FP4 & Vista

We have this issue but only with FP4 (Fix Pack 4) on Vista. I can install and uninstall FP4 and make the issue appear and disappear.

The Spell Check dialog is hidden or behind the main window. I’ve instructed users to hit ‘esc’, which will close the spell-check dialog – wherever it happens to be that you can’t see – and give you back control.

I stopped rolling out FP4 because it has triggered two issues that were not previously present:

  1. this invisible spell check dialog

  2. blank email message bodies when the source is from the internet and the body contains html/mime. The workaround is to turn off browser mime rendering in the preferences and/or set this in an ini setting in policy.

Come on IBM, I get tired of defending Notes against these things to an already skeptical user base.

Subject: Spell Check dialog invisible - Windows 7

After a lot of time lost on drivers upgrade, Java …etc, adjusting resolution, trying an external screen ( my problem started on one laptop, then last week on second, a new fresh installed OS and applications ) The problem is solved by adjusting the Display to Smaller - 100% ( Right click desktop / Personalize / Display ) both 100 & 125 % are ok, don’t know why and how the 150% got as the default after a fresh installation !!

Subject: File windows stuck behind main Notes Window

I just had an issue just like this, but with the File window when you want to Send and File an email. The screen appears to be frozen. But the truth is that the File window is stuck behind the Main Lotus Notes window. I’m in Windows 7 x64. If I hold down the Alt key and press tab once, then I hover the mouse over the Lotus program icon, the file windows appears. As soon as I click on Lotus Notes to make it active, that window goes back behind the main window again. I can press esc and have control over the main lotus windows again. But it just happens again when I try sending again. In my case, I got around this by Restoring Down the window and making it smaller than the File window would be…this way when I click Send and File, the File window is bigger than the lotus main window. This allowed me to bring it’s focus to the foreground. After that, it did not occur again. While this may have been a one time fluke/occurrence, that procedure may help someone else. BTW, I’m not using a laptop. However, I do have four monitors.

Hope this helps.

Subject: update

So I have discovered, upon unplugging my extra monitor, that this issue only happens when I have my Notes client on my second LCD (plugged into my laptop via an analog VGA connector). When Notes is on my laptop’s main LCD, the dialog is displayed properly.

Subject: same issue under Vista

I have what appears to be the same issue when running 8.5.1 FP1 on an external monitor (extended desktop) connected to my Lenovo X200s running Vista. My workround is Ctrl-break, move the Notes application back to my laptop screen and send again, this time spell check gets focus and I can continue.
