I have a question that I am hoping someone can answer – I have searched the forum and haven’t found anything unless I missed it – If I did – I apologize – Just point me in the right direction –
My question is – We are getting about 1000 of these types of messages a day – What can I do to get rid of these-- Especially since they have our domain listed? – It takes resouces for the server to check every single message and I have the server set to check the domino directory – If they are not listed to reject so they are not sitting in the mail.box.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

The good news is that this does not take many system resources to handle these attacks. The lookup for the username is one of the most optimized routines in the Core API. Make sure that you turn Inbound Pipelining off for your site.

I went through this and did more damage than good (i.e., trying to come up with scripts, modifying templates, etc. I spent more time than necessary. We are using Spam Sifter from INVCS (a bunch of ex-Iris guys we met at Lotusphere). So for it’s working great, and we got in for less than $2500…

The most obvious thing is to simply blacklist these (again see Chris Linfoot’s) site. There are a number software packages out there that will filter spam out as well. TrendMicro, et. al. None of these are terribly expensive.
Other alternatives not listed at the time of this posting? Well, there are appliances that can and will do the scrubbing for you, Symantec for one has a gateway product thats fairly robust. Another thing you seem to be mentioning unintentionally is that the server is already running slowly. This on top of spam you might consider adding either a gateway (Notes server for internet email processing) and/or putting a product like TrendMicro OfficeScan for Notes/Domino (thats not exact but close enough for now) on the second box.
Another thing comes to mind is running diskeeper or defragging the server if its an “aging” box in need of maintenance theres nothing like a bit more memory or drive space to “grease the wheels” a bit. Sometimes even a little effort can make a big difference.
