After running a few days the SMTP will generate delivery failures for for some (not all) emails with the error the “could not connect to host verizon.net because the server is not responding”. If I reboot the server everything works for a few days…
How’s your name resolution when you get the not responding message. Can you ping verizon.net from the machine running your Domino sever when you get the error message?
It sounds like you do not utilize a mail relay… that is … your Domino SMTP server is internet-facing.
When these these messages stop routing - at that time- are you able to perform a tracert to that DNS name from the Domino server? …or perhaps you are losing connectivity to your DNS server to resolve the name? Also when your in this condition, do other msgs route? both inbound and/or outbound? Did this problem just start occuring? If so…any recent network changes, etc?
Yes, when these messages stop routing other messages get sent. When the problem occurs again will try the tracert and other suggestions.
There have been recent hardware / software changes. We replaced previous server box that had Win 2000 with newer hardware running Win 2003. Additionally, we retired an aging IIS server and moved it’s functionality to the same Domino smtp server. The new server has dual nics which I use to seperate the IIS and Domino / SMTP traffic. During the setup we inadvertantly installed Microsoft smtp which had port conflicts with the Domino smtp - we turned off the Microsoft smtp.
We do have one other problem with the server during bootup where we get several “iis worker process problem…” errors that I have not been able to solve.
That may take care of the IIS conflicts if you are trying to load both web servers.
You may try pointing the Domino engine to a different DNS server and see if your name resolution improves. If you look at the 2k3 box do you see anything in the event viewer about DNS issues?
