Hi we received the folllowing error message last night on our Domino Server - just wondering if anyone can tell me exactly its complaining about - oh and the nsmtp.exe task also crashed.
Here’s some more details from the log:
11/01/2006 12:19:31 AM SMTP Server: Error storing received message
11/01/2006 12:19:31 AM AMFE: ERROR opening note (Invalid or nonexistent document)
11/01/2006 12:27:33 AM SMTP Server: Maximum number of memory segments that Notes can support has been exceeded
Still trying to handle the email, it thought there was a problem with the message header syntax.
Now, there could actually have been a problem with the message header syntax. A problem that, say, caused a memory overflow. Or, maybe the message was just too large. If you see a message stuck in the mail.box from around that time, you might want to examine it…on your local machine.

Hi
In response to below:
You might also want to be sure that you:
set in the server config a limit on message size
We have a limit of 20mb per email - but of course that won’t stop large emails trying to be sent
have antivirus running on your mailserver
We are currently trialing the Lotus Add-on from ESET’s NOD package.
When the NOD package was installed on access file scanning was also enabled, and the Notes data folders and Temp folder were not excluded from scanning. I’m now wondering if this could have caused the problem. The Lotus NOD Add-on was scanning an email and the On-Access scanner might have tried to scan it at the same time? Do you think this could this cause a problem?

Sorry I didn’t answer sooner - the Forum notifications don’t always work. (Grr.)
I’m not familiar with the AV package you’re using. But your idea that the Notes folders should be excluded form file scanning makes a lot of sense. In general, an AV package needs to be Domino-aware and allow Domino to access files at all times. Most accomplish this by having the machine-level scanning exclude Domino, and having a separate piece that scans sort of from within Domino, such as while mail is routing, or in databases without causing access conflicts.
I would suggest you followup with the vendor on their requested configuration for your environment.
