SMTP Routing - user not local

Hello all,

In the Internet there is a SMTP server for the domain “xx.de”. All Internet mails to this domain are sent from this STMP server to a Domino server. All users on the Domino server use as their internet address the “xx.de”. All incoming mails are delivered to the users correctly.

Outgoing mails from the Domino server to the Internet take their way to the above mentioned Internet SMTP server. This server is configured to only send mails to the Internet when the sender domain contains the “@xx.de” to avoid using it as a spam server. Everything fine.

Now the problem that occurs identically under these circumstances:

The Notes user “Max Mustermann/DEP/company” (Max.Mustermann@xx.de) has the forwarding address “Max.Mustermann@gmx.de” in his person document in the address book

The Notes user “Max Mustermann/DEP/company” (Max.Mustermann@xx.de) has defined a rule that incoming mail to him should be forwarded to “Max.Mustermann@gmx.de”

  • gmx.de is only an example - it happens with any domain!

the following happens:

The Domino server receives the mail to Max Mustermann (either a Notes mail to “Max Mustermann/DEP/company” or an Internet mail to “Max.Mustermann@xx.de”) and correctly tries to forward it to “Max.Mustermann@gmx.de”. This process can be watched at the server console. But the server cannot deliver the mail to “Max.Mustermann@gmx.de” with the failure “user not local”.

Why? - and what can be done?

Surely, if you do not not allow any other domain other than @xx.de then gmx.de is invalid and hence will not be sent?

Could you allow all Notes users to relay messages only ???

Inbound Relay Enforcement

Perform Anti-Relay enforcement for these connecting hosts: External hosts

Exclude these connecting hosts from anti-relay checks:

Exceptions for authenticated users: Allow all authenticated users to relay

Hello Rod,

thank you for your answer. Yes, all the settings are as you described.

Of course I understand that a person other than @xx.de will not be able to send mails, and that would be correct. But in my mind an incoming mail is delivered to Max Mustermann. Then the system becomes aware that the message should be forwarded to the @gmx.de address, and therefore the new sender should be Max Mustermann, who belongs to @xx.de and should be able to send the message.

Obviously I am completely wrong with that, or?

Had a thought over weekend! Have you tried creating a mail rule in the users client? Do you have a 6.5 mail box structure? If so create a rule to send a copy of each message to the external domain. let me know.
