SMTP routing thru another server

Hi…I am new in this forum. I hope this association with you all will be fruitful for all of us. Anyway I have got a query which I myself could not sort out. Following is the same:

I enabled the SMTP in my gateway domino server and configured the connection document accordingly. Then I connected it directly to the internet and found that SMTP mailing is working absolutely fine. We were able to send & receive mails to & from outside.

Now I want to send and receive the mails to & from our domino server via another server. What I want basically is that my SMTP Domino server will not send/receive the mails directly to/from the internet, rather will forward the mails to another server within the same network(which need not be a Domino server), which will in turn transfer them to internet and also receive all the incoming mails from internet and transfer them to my SMTP domino server after necessary mail filtering. Now my questions are:

  1. How it can be done?

  2. Is there any utility from IBM which can be loaded in that server (which will be receiving/sending mails from/to directly intermet) which will work as relay cum mail filtering agent?

specify smart host in your smtp configuration on Domino (either IP or name) domino will route messages through that, same way on your smtp gateway (not domino server) which is going to receive internet email specify your SMTP domino server as next hoop and as long domino listen on 25 you good

rafal, thanks for your response.

I have already specified the smart host in the domino server to route messages. It works. In the domino console it shows that it is going there to the IP of smtp gateway (not domino sever). But where is it going there in the smtp gateway (not domino server)? How to through the mails from there towards internet??

  1. Do I need to install any utility in my smtp gateway (not domino server) to push the mails towards internet and receive mails from internet?

  2. In the smtp gateway (not domino server) how will I mention my Domino SMTP server as next HOP ?

  3. I also need my smtp gateway (not domino server) to filter the mails before forwarding to my Domino SMTP server.

Pls note that my smtp gateway (not domino server) runs Windows 2000 server.

Your smtp gateway CANNOT be just any server it has to be some sort of 3rd party smtp software i.e. Symantec Mail Security for SMTP or Baracuda or any other applience like that, all your answer are there when you configuring this 3rd pary software or hardware to be smrt host for your in and out-going email

OK. I will try out some third party smtp software.Anyway can I configure two seperate connection documents in my Domino smtp server like one connection document for outgoing mails and one for incoming mails?
