HELP!! For some reason, our outbound mail queues up. If I check the log some mail eventually gets sent but it’s slow. I really need help with this. It sounds like a network issue somehow but that’s out of my realm.
Are you going via a relay, or direct to other SMTP servers?
Could be something to do with MIME - next time it happens, see if there are any mails with .htm attachments, and delete them (or just cut them from the db) and then see if the router starts going again.
[0774:0040-0414] SMTPClient: Connection broken after a network read timeout
This I just saw in the notes log. Also, when I first start a console session I see this:
DNS: non-existent Domain
SORRY again… I never answered your relay question. I am so busy, I must have 30 different tasks running on my machine right now…
Anyway, I see an address in the COnfiguration document for relay to. I am very new to this Domino stuff, I didn’t set the server up. I did do the upgrade from 4.67 to 6. The messages like above lead me to think it’s a network issue. Or, maybe the server is simply slowing down and I need to start monitoring it’s performance a little more closely.
Hi Mitch,Green or grey at Notes I think you’ve hit the spot. This is a network issue. And I can tell you it’s a DNS issue. The DNS server your outbound SMTP Domino server is querying has problems keeping up the speed. This means that Domino has to wait for the DNS answer sooooo looooong that the session finally times out. This is also the case why you see mails are being delivered but at a VERY slow pace.
It is very important that the nearby network resources are up to spec. and can keep up the pace with the Domino server.
…however this leads me to another thought. There is also the possibility that one of the boxes nearby the fierwall might be suffering from computer virus. You have some network viruses that flood the network with “ping” signals etc. and they can cause the network to slow down a lot and even stop.
Hope these ideas can lead you further in your quest
Thank You SO MUCH. When this first started, or atleast when we first noticed it, I said DNS. But I’m not a network person and I got beat for it. I will certainly give this to our network person because unfortunately I don’t have the expertise in this area. Thank You again!
How about a memory leak? Would a memory leak cause something like this? Or Symantec virus scanning software? That was one of my initial thoughts so I checked the settings there. There isn’t anything that says specifically “scan outgoing”. I did change the heuristic settings to MED instead of HIGH. The incoming mail moves fast, within seconds even though it’s scanned on entry.
