SMTP/Internet Mail

Hello: I was wondering if anyone can help me with interpreting the headers in an SMTP message? Specifically with the x-notes. In a delivery failure message, I see a “Diagnostic code” of:

Diagnostic-Code: X-Notes; Delivery time expired

Action: failed

status: 5.0.0

However, I don’t see this on our server in mail.box anywhere marked as dead, it appears that the message has disappeared.

Is there any way I can track this to determine if it actually was received on our Domino server from our mail gateway.

At what point and where does the X-Notes get added?

Delivery failure doesn’t spawn a separate message to notify you of the failure. It marks the actual message as failed.

The delivery failure message you are looking at should be the original message. If you are looking at it in the mail.box, you aren’t going to see the message itself. (You can cut or copy/paste it into a mailfile to view the original message.)

If you want to look up the failure reason “5.0.0” (even though it is pretty much spelled out as “delivery time expired”), then check out http://rfc.sunsite.dk/rfc/rfc1893.html .

If you want to know why the delivery time expired, I suggest you check the server logs. You’ll probably see the message attempt to be delivered to the recipient’s server, and that server as ‘not responding’.
