Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Dear All, let me share the experience with subject.

  1. Everybody should read Understanding Lotus Notes Smart Upgrade Appendix C - it will save a lot of time.

I’ve used the following parameters in SUSetRunAsWizard:

-a /s /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+"

for Attached kit

and

/s /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+"

for Network share

  1. if you will run SURunAs via Smart Upgrade - then do not select this option:

Restart Notes after update:

since Notes Client will be started BEFORE upgrade finish and users will see a prompt to close Notes client to continue upgrade

  1. If you will create full install kit with SUSetRANASWIZARD.EXE and attach it in Smart Upgrade Kit document then after Single-User-Install upgrade user will be asked to Restart OS (since some files was locked?),

but after restart bookmarks.ntf and pubnames.ntf files will not be correctly upgraded. (template version=7.0.1, while other templates like mail7 and iNotes6 was updated successfully to 7.0.2 and 6.5.6 and Help-About Notes shows 7.0.2). And it does not matter if user in or not in the Power Users group.

Please Note, that the same snapshot was successfully upgraded with network shared kit.

  1. Multi-User upgrade is broken until you have Power Users rights.

On multi-user installation, user will be prompted “Du you have …”

I think this question should be suppressed when SURUNAS.exe file is used for upgrade.

Unfortunately, after pressing “Yes” upgrade did not started at all:

At this moment, SURUNAS.EXE is not started, and, probably, client smart upgrade code is checking if CURRENT user can replace dlls in notes program directory.

If you will run SURunAs.exe manually from the network share specified in Upgrade Kit, then Notes client will be upgraded, but user will not have sufficient rights to use newly installed templates and upgrade design of local DBs. I think there is no UNID index in template and Notes need write access to that shared template.

===================================================================================================

All above is about 7.0.2 version (client only) downloaded from Passport site (C94QIEN.exe). Tested under user account without Administrator rights (even not a power user) . Lotus notes was configured to use sametime. Tested with multi-user and single-user installs.

I’m still not sure if this RunAs is a supported feature in 7.0.2. Look at the picture - there is a word “Beta” in the description.

Only worked sequence was:

  1. Unpack C94QIEN.exe to the network share

  2. Create SURunas.exe using “Store reference file on a network”. Select setup.exe from network share

  3. /v"ALLUSERS=1" is really mandatory. Otherwise Setup will put shortcuts and program group in C:\ root folder %-(

  4. Put SURunas.exe on network share

  5. Create S.U. kit document with “On shared Network Drive” selected and Restart Notes after update: - cleared.

  6. use above kit to upgrade single-user install. Also works for Multi-user install if user is in Power Users group.

what a…

Now I have to find better tool to upgrade 1000 desktops.

Well, sounds like you’re having as much fun with this as I am…

When I run SURunas.exe (created as you describe) I get a wonderful message:

LotusInstall.log error

Unable to open the log file LotusInstall.log.log

That file doens’t exist, and FileMon doesn’t see any attempt to access it.

It appears to be caused by having the “Home Folder” connected to a remote share - when I run it with a profile that doesn’t use this there is not problem.

Great…

Time to file PMR…

Dear Peter,

Yes, I had several problems, but most was fixed with help from IBM side

now I’ve successfully upgraded about 500 desktops vie network shared kit , including those which have redirected “my documents”

Rest will be updated soon (via attached kit) after final tests

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Hello everybody,

I’ve read this post to find out if I have the same issues with my upgrade…and looks like we’re in the same boat…

here is my case:

-I’m testing an upgrade from 6.5.1 to 7 (C86imna.exe)

-the only error I got is "Failed to open log Install.log.log)

-if a run setup I’m getting a strange error:

error 1324: The path My Pictures contains an invalid character

…and the upgrade fails.

It is true that my pathis like \FileServer\Users$%username%\My Documents… but there is any way to make this SuRunas.exe working?

Thanks,

Gabe

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

I am also running into a pop-up message right before the upgrade starts. “Failed to open the log file lotusinstall.log.log” Has anyone else encountered this? Why is it adding the .log extension when it already exists? The good news is the end users can click “OK” and the install proceeds without problem. I would like to make the message go away though as it causes end user questions and confusion etc…

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Hi Peter, I am also getting this issue, did you find a work around?

Subject: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Andrey, if you want to work some of these issues with me, please feel free to send me an e-mail at jpaganet@us.ibm.com

  1. I believe we have a work around if you use /w on you command line. The /w means wait

so for attached kit

-a /s /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+" becomes -a /s /w /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+"

and for shared drive

/s /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+" becomes /s /w /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+"

  1. if you will run SURunAs via Smart Upgrade - then do not select this option:

Restart Notes after update:

If the work around in 1) works that you should be able to check Restart Notes after update.

  1. I’ll have to work with our QE to see if we can get this reproducible so we can troubleshoot…

  2. In your #4 scenario, can you run procexp.exe and see what has nnotes.dll accessed… I’m guessing ntmulti.exe… You can get procexp.exe here.

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Will have to work on troubleshooting what is going on with templates versions you are describing.

John Pag

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

I have followed all of these steps as mentioned and had no luck with SURunAS and 7.02

I never get past the following message after launching SURunAs;

“Failed to Launch Process as specified user: 3”

I have tried several domain administrator accounts and nothing changes.

Is this a notes or windows error?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

usually this error means than you’ve specified wrong UNC path. Don’t use mapped drive path. Keep in mind that this SURUNAS is not wise enough to reconstruct UNC path from mapped drive. (mapped drive exist only for current credentials, not for admin)

Look at your SUSetRunasWizard.log

check for reference path

run exactly that unc path from client which you want to upgrade to check if it’s correct

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Same problem here.Correcting UNC path and using no mapped drives worked.

Thanks everybody.

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Thank You Andrey,I can’t believe I did not notice that in the wizard documentation.

I opened a PMR 4 days ago and IBM haven’t responded.

I still am not out of the woods though,

Smart Upgrade detects a version upgrade. When you accept to upgrade, it closes notes, a dialog box flicks up briefly and then nothing…

Can you see a problem with the following;

  1. Use Install Shield Tuner to create Notes7.02.mst file

  2. Create SURunAs.exe pointing to share with Lotus Notes.7.0.2.msi & Notes7.02.mst and referencing the Lotus Notes 7.0.2.msi

  3. Create Smart Upgrade document to run the SURunAs.exe

the problem seems to be that if I was running the MSI in the Smart Upgrade Document then I can reference the “TRANSFORMS=xxx.mst” in the Smart Upgrade Document. If I run the SURunAs.exe in the SUD then the “Transforms” Argument doesn’t make sense.

Where am I going wrong. Can I combine SURunAs, SmartUpgrade and Transformed MSI all together?

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Add all required files in the wizard, then select Setup.exe - it will run correct MSI file and should pass MSI parameters via /v switch.

For example, use the following parameters in the wizard:

/s /w /v"ALLUSERS=1 TRANSFORMS=\fileserver\share\upgrade.mst /qb+"

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

I have followed all of these steps as mentioned but had no luck with SURUNAS and 7.02

The Smart upgrade installs fine but errors out while setting up the client. I’m NOT using network option but storing everything in a package.

“Failed to Launch Process as specified user: 1062”

I have tried domain and local admin accounts.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

Ok, JohnI’ll make new set of tests with your workarounds

and will let you know the results.

Also I’ve found in this forum old workaround for user write access to shared templates (UNID index missed in some templates):

replace that templates in install package with the same version from already installed and configured client.

Subject: RE: Smart Upgrade 7.0.2 Run As feature

I’m really happy with the SUSetRunAsWizard since we lock down every workstations. Unfortunately I’m seeing inconsistencies with the options for attached kit. I haven’t tried the Shared network drive.

-a does not work with attached kits for some reasom. The option that worked for me was /w /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+" or /v"ALLUSERS=1 /qb+"

We are seeing a dialog box stating the “upgrade was cancelled” when users clicks the OK button following a complete upgrade. The client upgrades fine to 7.0.2 but the message is not reassuring and the report in the tracking database states the upgrade was interrupted.

Also, I’m unable to upgrade Release 6.5.5 clients. All 6.5.5 clients are getting the error…

“ErrorMessage IV=There are no updates available for your Notes client Release 6.5.5. There were no matching kits found in the Smart Upgrade database smartup.nsf on Server.”

I’ve used every possibility for the source field such a “*” to “Release V6.5.5”…etc. And yes I read the redbook on smart upgrade - nice job.

Final question if anyone knows it… When using the SUSetRunAsWizard.exe should you use the “options” in the dialog box or the “options field” in the SmartUpdate database. Help and release notes are not clear on the topic. From my testing don’t use the options field in the smartupdate database but I could be wrong.

My guess would be in the Source Version field you have this incorrectly set…

Release 6.5.4/6.0.5 or previous?

and shoud have

Release 6.5.4/6.0.5 or previous?

Install Type:

with appropriate Install Type selected for the source version…

If this doesn’t work… send me an e-mail at jpaganet@us.ibm.com and I’ll help you figure it out…

Any options you pass via the SmartUpgrade database field will be passed to the SURunAs.exe you created. Any options you pass via the options field in the wizard will be passed to the setup.exe you specified in the wizard.
