Smart Update does not start if Mail File Location is not set to On Server

I have been struggling with Smart Update over the last two days. I have it working with the help of all the posts in this forum but I still have one huge problem. The Smart Update is only invoked if “Mail File Location” is set to “On Server” in the location document. I have even tried switching it from “Local” to “On Server” and that will give me the update prompt immediately. This is a big problem for me because half of the company works remotely. Though everyone has a broadband connection to the office, they use a local replica of e-mail to avoid waiting for the network to read mail. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a workaround?

It is triggered on client authentication with a server for a foreground session. I don’t think background replication is enough since it is not a full session.

It should work if they access a database on a server.
