Slow to view/open message

Hi,

I have a client with several users on 8.5.2 with the accompanying Traveler and SameTime features.

Globally the performance of the mail client is not quite at the level their old Exchange/Outlook was, but the additional features and integration with their global counterparts outweighs them.

However, one user (and it would have to be the CEO) suffers more so than other. Unlike his staff, when it comes to opening or previewing email, it may take up to 40 seconds for an item to appear on screen. It is particularly noticeable when he starts his machine in the morning or has been away from his desk for a period of time.

System and Network details:

All other the machines on the network are dual-core AMD units running Windows XP Pro, they all feature 2Gb RAM and gigabit NICs. The CEO machine has an AMD Athlon II 260, 4Gb RAM driving Windows XP Pro. His machine was just over a month from a single core 2Gb system.

Any pointers would be much appreciated. I have compared settings/preferneces on the client with others on the network and they seem be okay.

I’m haven’t been seriously involved with Notes/Domino since '97. A lot has changed.

Subject: Server Connection? Anti-Virus Scan?

Hi,

There are so many things that might be causing this.

First of all it might be worth checking the connection speed to his home mail server. Consider the geographical location and perform some ping tests. Use the trace connection tool in notes prefs to confirm he is taking the most direct route to the server and make sure he is not passing thru some server in Timbuktu.

Also, if it’s only the emails with attachments then it could be a local anti-virus client that’s holding things up (because it is choosing to scan every email when opened).
