Server upgrade question

We are upgrading our servers from 5.0.8 to R6. I wanted to know if 6.5.3 the best version to go for or any if there is any earlier version which is more stable.

I need to upgrade 3 servers which replicate. Do I have to upgrade all of them together? If I have one R6 server and the rest are R5, is there a problem with replication?
