Every morning at 1.00am the server kicks off the task UPDATE, this is usually fine but for the last few days the task has been locking open random mail files.
This means that when my customers get in for their 9-5’s they cant access their mailfiles nor can admin to be honest even under full access admin.
Any ideas as to what this could be and how to resolve the issue.
The only solution so far is to quit the server.

Do you really have your server set to run Update at 1:00? The Updall task should run be default, but at 2:00, after Design runs at 1:00. Update should run constantly. Unless there is a really good reason to deviate from this, I strongly recommend using these defaults.
In any case, neither Update nor Updall should prevent the user from accessing the database. Can you provide some more information about any specific errors you are receiving?

This is the Error im getting in the log:

Will check with backups as maybe that is accessing the file at the same time.
if its not backups then what else could keep the database in use?

This was a problem with backup exec access the file at the same time and update.
