Server to Server Replication

I have two domino servers setup for replication. The databases that are unique to one server is not replicating to the other server rather the databases that they have in common are the only one replicating. I tried to specify the new databases for replication but had no luck. Do I need to create the new databses to the second server in order for replication to work? Suggestions?

I figured it out. Select the database to copy and then select copy new database to destination server. Replication will occur automatically if you dont specify any folders.

Subject: I think you might have figured incorrectly… You need to create a new Replica, not Copy.

I refer you to the Administrators Help, Replicas, Creating.

You can create a database replica using the Administration Process by selecting a database and then choosing Database - Create Replica from the tools pane in the Domino Administrator.

Check access

Triggered by: Initiating the command from the Domino Administrator.

Carried out on: The server that contains the database being replicated.

Carried out: Immediately

Result: The Administration Process on the source server checks that the user submitting the request and the destination server have at least Reader access in the ACL of the database. If the user and destination server have the necessary access and if a Connection document between the source and destination server exists, the Administration Process generates a “Create replica” request in the Administration Requests database of the source server.

Create replica

To populate the replica, the user submitting the request and the source server must have Create Replica access to the destination server.

Triggered by: Successful completion of the Check Access administration request.

Carried out on: The destination server for the database.

Carried out: Immediately

Result: A new replica of the database is placed on the destination server. The database is populated during the next replication.

In order for replication to work, you must have a replica copy of the database on both servers where replication is taking place.

Once you have replica copies of the databases on each server, in your replication connection document you can specify the file names of the databases that you want to replicate

If you do not specify any file names in the replication connection document, all databases that share the same replica id that exist on each server will be replicated.

How do you initially create the replica database on the destination server? Do you drag and drop? I have tried just about everything.

Jeff, you do this thru the Domino Administrator. Administer the server on which the database currently exists. Open the file view and highlight the database. Expand the Tools > Database and select Create Replica. Follow the dialog, if the target server is not listed, select Other… and then Add. You need to manually input the server name eg secondserver/mydomain. The Domino admin process then does the job for you.

Subject: Welcome to Domino.

Jeff, I’m happy to hear you have moved from Exchange over to the much more powerful and secure IBM Collaboration world. As a new admin, I’d suggest you start by taking a look at a few of the free sources of information, and then perhaps jump in with both feet by taking a course from one of our education partners.

First, the Admin Help DB. It is actually an amazing database. For example, there is a specific document titled “How server-to-server replication works” which would have helped you out with your post.

Second, WebCasts… we have dozens of them free on the lotus.com site.

Third, RedBooks (http://w3.itso.ibm.com/) are the IBM technical journals for all sorts of information. There are dozens of Domino Rebooks, covering topics like server configuration, backup, spam removal, and many many more.

I could go on, with all the Domino related web sites, conferences, business partners, publications, trade journals, books (including the “For Dummies” series), but I’ll let you digest all the above first!

Enjoy, and once again, welcome.
