Server name resolution

Hi everyone,

I have 2 Domino servers in my local LAN. Every once in a while, client applications seem to ‘forget’ where one of the servers is. The only way I’ve found to jog it’s memory is to go into User Preferences, and do a ‘trace’ to the server’s IP address - then I can find the server once again.

I find this completely mystifying since:

  1. I have a connection document with this server in it, with the correct IP address in my Address book

  2. Windows can consistently find the server no problem using any of a) DNS, b) WINS or c) a broadcast

I have to ask the question:

Why, oh why would my mail client decide to ignore some fundamental functions of my Operating System’s network stack and choose to implement it’s own, seemingly faulty name resolution scheme?

Is there some way to tell Notes - “Use DNS to locate servers”?

I’m sorry if I seem frustrated, but I am. This seems so obvious to me…the whole point of the OSI model was not to reinvent the wheel…

Anyway - Sorry for the vent! :slight_smile:

If anyone has any suggestions for how to fix or workaround this problem, it would be greatly appreciated (as always).

Do you have more than one port enabled on your client? Is the top enabled one in your list using TCPIP?

If you have more than one, is that port also listed as an allowable LAN port on your connection document?

Hi Charles,

My Connection doc (that Notes created by itself, I believe) had only TCP/IP enabled. My Notes client has TCP/IP and LAN0 enabled. I added LAN0 to my connection doc, and I’ll see if this happens again.

Still, I can’t understand why Notes is trying to do any of this, rather than leaving it to the O/S…(no I don’t expect an actual answer to that part!) :wink:
