Server mail rule and journaling - execution confusion

Hi all,

we have set up a test environment with domino 8.5 servers and clients. We are especially testing journaling.

We have only one configuration document for all servers in the test domain. The rule states “journal all messages”. Journaling is set to “copy to local database”.

Now we have a theese users as test:

“Han Solo” on server “Tatooine”

“Obi Wan Kenobi” on server “Tatooine”

“Darth Vader” on server “Endor”

If Darth Vader sends a message to Han Solo, the message gets journaled in Endor’s mail journal. No Problem so far

If Han Solo sends a message to Darth Vader, the message gets journald in Endor’s mail journal.

Now thats odd because I would assume that the first router (being Tatooine’s router) that gets hold of the message journals it and flags it so it should not be journaled again.

Even more weird: If Han Solo send a message to Obi Wan Kenobi (both on Server Tatooine) the message ALSO gets journaled in Endor’s mail journal despite the fact that the message never leaves Tattoine’s router heading for Endor…

Any thoughts on this?

  1. Do we experience a bug?

  2. Is it because we only have one configuration document?

  3. Is there a technote or something on that clarifies server mail rules with only a single configuration document?

Thanks and cheers

Jens

What happens if you send mail to Princess Leia?

Subject: SOLVED - Homemailserver in location document was wrong

Hi all,

we’ve figured that out. The clients seems to try to reach the home mail server that is given in the location document and drops the email in the respective router. As we had a wrong home mail server “Endor” for user “Han Solo” (in fact we kept the home mail server all the time) the emails got journaled on server “Endor” always

HTH
