Server freezes

Server freezes at various times of day. Must restart service through control panel to bring Domino server back running. No response in Lotus Domino Server window. Mail routing and Miscellaneous logs show no error events. Has anyone experienced this issue? Has anyone found incompatiblity with NT4/SP6A and Domino server 6.5.1?

Subject: Server freezes - Are you minimizing the server console window?

One of the fun things to watch out for when running on NT4 is that if you minimize the server console, the Domino server will consume huge amounts of resources and appear to hang while it moves from a foreground to background Windows application. While we were running on NT4, we had to put messages that said something along the lines of “never minimize the Domino console.”

To my recollection, this only occured while running the server as a Windows service. The problem disappeared when we went to Win2K.

We have our oldest server running NT4/SP6a on a 333mHz processor with all of 144Mb of memory. No problems. Notes is 6.5.1. The only challenge for the server is that being so old and close to retirement it is also a tad tight on disk space. One of our other servers locked recently when it ran a backup and there was not enough space for all the files before the backup started. Can you identify if anything is due to run at the times the server freezes? Are all the incidents at the same time? DOes anything show in the NT Log?

I haven’t found anything in the NT event logs. Since it happenes at random times, like 8pm,4am, 11pm, etc, I can’t pinpoint it on another process like indexing or such starting or replication. The other processes such as backups(Arcserver) network access to shares, etc, all keep working. Got nine 9(gb) available.
