Serious usability bug 8.5.1!

  1. open an email with attachments 2) select an attachment, right-click and select copy (or CTRL-C)

  2. create new email and goto body

  3. right-click and select paste (or CTRL-V)

The result is UNACCEPTABLE for any user!!!:

You get all attachments copied and some images too!!!

Subject: read mode vs. edit mode

with the document in read mode you are copying the entire document when using copy/paste. Try placing the document in edit mode and repeat your steps, bet you get 1 attachment pasted.

Subject: Ah… and if somebody doesn’t have edit access?

Subject: Worked… but unacceptable!

Thx… it worked, but it is unacceptable that one has to get into edit mode. Suppose I’m only a reader that wants to copy…

Subject: workaround trick

I have never seen this before and I have been using Notes for many years. I realized the reason is that I don’t select only the attachment which I want to copy. I select one space to the right of the attachment and then move the mouse to the left and press Ctrl-C. Thereby I am copying an attachment and a space …

Subject: Re: SERIOUS USABILITY BUG 8.5.1!

I think it’s been that way for many a year. Yes, it’s not ideal, but it’s a simple case of training users to select the attachment first before right-clicking.

Subject: i don’t get

what’s serious about it

Subject: you are not serious!

I thought this was a serious forum! When a users gets an email with several attachments, and only wants to select the second attachment to copy and send to someone by simply selecting it and using copy/paste in a new message, with the result that he gets the whole bunch copied, THEN I BELIEVE THIS IS SERIOUS!

Try it yourself first before you comment. It is 100% reproducable. I showed it to 2 fellow developers and they were blown away… could believe it!

Subject: These are community Forums.

Hi,

These forums are for the community and not the formal support structure. So not all responses will be from IBM.

I tested your issue here and I reproduced it. I have created an SPR SODY85NC4M for development to investigate further.

From looking at the issue the confusion appears to come from the black line that appears around the attachment when you right click it.

It is bit misleading as you haven’t actually selected the attachment at that point, but the whole document.

To select a single attachment in read only mode:

  1. Move your mouse over the attachment slightly left of center.

  2. Hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse right slightly.

  3. At this point the attachment will be covered in a black box. This means the attachment is now selected.

  4. Right click and select copy. It should work with Paste at that point.

I will do up a tech note as well for you a little later. Hope that helps.

A misuse of the tool its hardly a bug.

I assume you are a new user with Domino? You will just have to learn the way things get done.

Cheers

Subject: Me? or the OP?

I am not new.

An SPR isn’t always a bug btw. Sometimes the product may work as designed but not as a number of customers expect it to.

So logging an SPR helps development to clarify or change such features.

Subject: Unfortunately Marc said he did select it…

“2) select an attachment, right-click and select copy (or CTRL-C)”

  • So this does not appear to be training to select the attachment first. Or did I miss something?..

Subject: Please read before answering!

In my steps there is… select attachment!
