Separating Mail and Application services from a single Domino server

Hi,

We currently have a Domino server that is acting both as the production mail server and application server. We are in the process of splitting these services onto two different Domino servers. Leaving one for just for mail and the other just for the applications.

Any help where I can find, or maybe someone can point me to some documents at how to tackle and go ahead with such a setup? Perhaps some documentation from IBM themselves as I spent hours researching but having found anything on the subject yet.

Thanks!

Subject: Use the Database, Move feature

I would just use the database move feature in Domino Admin. When you move the databases you’ll have the option to create a redirect. The redirect is helpful for updating the clients workspace shortcuts or for any hard coded server names. If a user or application tries to open the database from the original server, the redirect will point it to the new server. I don’t think the redirect feature works for version 7 and below, so if you have 7 clients out there you’ll have a bit more work to do, but if they are all on 8.x.x you should be fine with the redirects.

Technically the mail file is an application, as it’s an NSF like everything else.

You’re going to have to move all the mail files or application files over to the new server. If you move applications you’ll need to verify you don’t have hardcoded server names in them as your applications will break.

If you move the mail files, I’m not sure if AdminP will update the person docs in the server address book for each person’s home mail server, so you may need to look at updating those as well.
