Send e-mail back when user is not in addressbook

Hi,

I want to send an e-mail back when a user is not in the addressbook. So that the sender knows he should use another address.

Is this possible and if so how can I turn it on

Rudy,this should happen automatically. Notes should normally create a non-delivery message and return this to the sender. You shouldn’t need to configure anything if your server is configured for the default.

There are however server settings which either accept messages with an invalid recipient, or forwards them to another server (SmartHost).

Also, server-based rules may change default behavior.

If you have any of these situations, please post your config info.

Use the “Verify that local domain recipients exist in the Domino Directory” setting on the “SMTP Inbound Controls” tab of your server’s Configuration document.

Here is text from the admin help -

Enabled - If the domain part an address specified in an SMTP RCPT TO command matches one of the configured local Internet domains, the SMTP listener checks all configured directories to determine whether the specified recipient is a valid user. If all lookups complete successfully and no matching username is found, the SMTP server returns a 550 permanent failure response indicating that the user is unknown. For example:

550 bad_user@yourdomain.com … No such user

Choosing this setting can help prevent messages sent to nonexistent users (for example, spam messages and messages intended for users who have left the organization) from accumulating in MAIL.BOX as dead mail.

Please resist the urge to do this.

One trick that spammers use is to send to thousands of common email IDs against target domains. Some get through, but most bounce. The spammers also use other people’s legitimate e-mail addresses for the “from” field of the spam

What this means is that your courtesy reply will most likely go to someone who has never sent the e-mail in the first place. That is, you will be generating more spam.

Daily routine.Open mail.box(es), delete all pending emails with positive wrong address… 100-200 emails /day, retype any miss type addresses. It’s a boring jobs but someone have to do it :).

If you want to resend email to the sender, it will take your valuable bandwith.

I think there is a redbook about this, somthing called “spam in domino R6”???
