Seeking experiences with SUS for upgrades

Our IT group just loves SUS (or WSUS, whichever is the most recent) for managing workstation configurations. I’m a bit nervous about the thought of using this for migrating our users from 4.6 to 6.5 since we have 2 main Notes user configurations plus a couple of outliers (*).

Any experiences - good or bad, using this MS tool?

Searched on SUS and WSUS - no good hits.

TIA.

Doug

(*) - User Notes client configs fall into three main buckets:

1 - Program is on C, ID, desktop and ini are on the users network ‘home’ drive. We use the c:\notes\notes.exe =U:\notes46\notes46.ini shortcut method to start 'em from whatever pc they’re running.

2 - Standard install - everything on C.

3 - Users who have to run many sessions at once on multiple PCs use a setup similar to #1 but rather than using their network home drive, they have a user specific directory on the local C: drive and a shortcut to an appropriate ini file.

Subject: Not possible

SUS and WSUS are only for deploying patches to Microsoft applications, and only those provided by Microsoft. Perhaps you’re thinking SMS. According to Microsoft:

“… the only updates available via WSUS are from Microsoft, for their opearting systems and applications. However, based on the architecture of WSUS, I can see where that might be possible in the future if Microsoft decides to expand the capabilities of their application. For installing excecutables, you may need to look more to SMS as a solution.”

Hi Doug,

I’m with you on your thinking. I use SUS, WSUS and am a Notes administrator but I would not consider myself using the Microsoft provided tool to upgrade an IBM product. The jump you are making from 4.6 to 6.5 is a big one and I would recomend that your team not just treat it as a straight client replacement and all will work fine idea. I would say read the upgrade planning docs as provided by Lotus and follow them. If you do that and something goes wrong then you will be able, with licesned software, to call the Domino helpdesk people and they will help, they are great to deal with as well. Done via the Micosroft method they will likely just point out the upgrade was not done following the correct procedure, still help but take a lot longer to fix.

Hope that view helps.

Good stuff. I have some ammunition if the IT group heads down that particular road.

Many thanks.
