Searching for the ultimate Excel export utility

Yes, I know that there are dozens of examples already posted in the forum. I have already tried several and figured it was worth asking if somebody already has the one I need. What I am trying to find is a Lotuscript utility for the ND6/7 client that will export the current UI view to Excel. The samples that I have found don’t exclude hidden columns. This will allow me to create a shared action that can be used in all views.

Thanks!

If you’d like to consider an export application specifically for Lotus Notes / Domino written totally in standard LotusScript (which fully supports web browsers) we have one which enables you to export Lotus Notes/Domino data from any database/view in the following formats:* CSV (comma)

  • Fixed Width

  • Tab Delimited

  • MS-Access

  • MS-Excel

  • MS-Word (rtf)

  • PDF

  • HTML

  • XML

It comes with its own LotusScript API so you can incorporate Export functionality from your existing applications into this application.

Features include:

  • Full support for web browsers to create exports and navigate around databases & design elements just like a Notes client.

  • Databases which may be exported from can be controlled.

  • Wizard for selecting the Database, views & documents to export.

  • Exports can be scheduled to be run on a once-off basis or periodically - regularly, hourly, daily or weekly.

  • Exports can be run as a background agent thread on a Notes R6.x client.

  • Filtering of unwanted characters from exported data.

  • Data in view columns can be exported or you can select specific fields in documents.

  • File attachments and OLE objects in documents can be exported.

  • Selection criteria can be used to specify which documents to export - this can be a Notes selection formula, based on values of document fields or based on view column values.

  • Exported files can be saved to the filesystem or in the database. Filenames can be specified or determined from a Notes formula or document field value.

  • Exported files can be automatically emailed at the completion of an export.

  • View column formatting such as font, alignment, color, data type, etc can be exported.

  • You can supply your own customised pre-export and post-export LotusScript code which will be automatically executed before/after the export.

  • Unique design cache engine to speed up navigation and selection of design elements in databases

  • Additional special document information can also be exported - attachment names, document size, responses, note id, universal id, created, last modified, last updated by.

  • Full help documentation

  • Full logging and online debugging to help with troubleshooting of problems. Error logs can be easily sent to AGE Computer support at the click of a button.

  • Intuitive user interface

  • Full update history

  • And much more…

Single user license costs less than an hour of a developer’s time.

Try opening a view and clicking File/Export, Save as a CSV file.

And you wonder why end users hate Lotus Notes… It’s too much to ask users to export a file and then import it to Excel, even though this is easy to do. My users are already using a one-click view action to open Excel and export the rows. They love this feature, so the other option will not go over well. What I’m looking for is a more universal version of the one I have.

Frank,

What you’re looking for is not for the faint of heart!

If you are serious about “hate Lotus Notes” it may have something to do with the level of expectations. What have you done to manage those? If your user needs the information enough, the only thing they need to know is how to export it. They’ll gladly do it.

Otherwise, I’d suggest that you roll your sleeves up, get down and dirty and use either the jxl.jar or the Apache poi.jar JAVA Excel creation libraries and pamper your users a little bit more ;-/

Again, you can do this with or without Notes on the machine, and with, or without Excel on the machine; oh, you can write Java agents to create these Excel files on the server just before it turns into a pumpkin at midnight, both without Excel installed on the server, and/or without the user around.

I have used an Export to Excel utility that I found in the sandbox and exports all the columns in the view to Excel - I seem to remember it was written by someone from Switzerland.

I can’t remember if it excludes hidden columns but there is a notesviewcolumn class property isHidden that you could test for so it should be easy to tweak to meet your requirements.
