Sametime Server deployment - Requesting Advice

We’re looking at using Sametime limited Use firm-wide within our organization.

We already have a good chunk of users (60+, roughly) using one centralized server but will be expanding to 2000+ users. These users are split up into about 50 different geographic offices whom all have their own Domino server already.

Is it worth distributing multiple sametime servers to larger offices (so there isn’t one single point of failure, and maybe save the little bandwidth)? Would you just add sametime onto the existing domino server in that office?

Or would you just put one main sametime server in your main office (which also centrally hosts some other services because it houses the best internet connection)?

Now that I’ve said that, would your answer/advice change if we used Sametime Standard (supporting file transfers, rich text image transfers, meetings, etc).

Any and all suggestions/advice/what-you’re-doing is appreciated. I realize not knowing all the specifics could be important on your advice, but we’ll use best-guess.

Subject: Centralize your ST server

A single Sametime server can easily handle basic chat for 2000-user organization; of course you might want a second for HA/DR purposes. I’m aware of organizations with a user population an order of magnitude larger than yours that run effectively on a single server (HA server available) even with rich chat (no meetings).

The administrative costs of distributing multiple ST servers to your offices is going to outweigh any bandwidth savings you might see. At 2000 users divided by 50 offices, I’d venture the majority of your IM and meeting usage would be inter-office rather than intra-office meaning isolating local traffic would provide little benefit.

MHO, but hope it helps,

Subject: I know. not in the right forum.

damnit. This should be in the sametime forum, I realize. But I bet more people would see it here.
