Sametime limited use

I have been contemplating whether or not to try to set up the “Limited-use Sametime server” that is included with Notes with Collaboration, but at the moment I am running on a single-server environment. From everything that I have read thusfar, it is better to run Sametime on a separate server for memory/processing reasons, but I’m wondering if that suggestion only applies to using the full version. The “Limited” version would just involve the instant messaging client (and I think Sametime Connect, plus web access). Any thoughts on just installing and running this on my single server?

I’ve run it on the same server as email without problems. This was for the embedded chat service in the Notes client, not the Sametime Connect client with whiteboard and video. You might want to add some ram first. It’s always a little risky to add additional services (like DECS or LEI) to your primary messaging server. At any rate, I did it and lived to tell about it.

Well, my organization has about 25 Notes users, so I’m pretty sure we should be alright. Thanks for the vote of confidence

Limited Use does not allow you to use Sametime Connect. I just installed it and found that out the hard way!

Limited Use gives you web browsing chat, and Instant Messenger in the Notes client. Also your Notes client have to be at least 6.5.4 or higher.

I did put it on another server, as we are just testing it to see if we want to purchase a full license. The install was fairly easy and painless. But then it is the only thing on that server.

Mike,

It is perfectly ok for the reason that you mentioned. It is the Limited Use Client…in that its merely just chatting capabilities. I have successfully installed it in an environment with well over 150 clients and have not had a single issue.

Also, it is my belief that your client need only be 6.5.2 (maybe even 6.5.1) or higher.

Domino server is 7.0.2, all my clients are 7.0.2. I will have to throw it into a test environment to figure out the best way to roll it out to people without scaring them. I have many remote users, so getting them config’d for it to work might also be a headache.
