I have a customer who is going to commit funds for an i7 64 bit machine running Windows 7 64bit and use it as a Domino 8.5.2 server. His reasons are so he can use the new PCI Express SSD drives (1.5TB/Sec) eg: www.OCZ.com It seems that SSD’s work well with Win 7 (& Linux) but not with Win 2008.Also the Windows license is much cheaper and he doesn’t need the Windows address book for user authentication. He can set the Win 7 machine for priority to background tasks.
Even if it is less efficient the overall throughput with SSD’s will be much faster.
I have recommended against on the basis of best engineering practices but what else can I say that will make sense to a guy who likes Meccano sets? Alternately is anyone out there doing this successfully?
