I’m not really sure about what you want to achieve (is this database for internet or intranet use etc.), but it would be better to first convert the dvd to a format that is more “web ready”, like divx. A format that needs much less bandwidth.

Do a search for - “convert to divx” dvd - in Google, there’s tons of freeware and low cost software for this.The only downside is that you need the divx codex for media player (or whatever video player you want to use).
Alternative: the Flash video format (as used on YouTube), this makes it possible to play video in the browser. But you really need a video expert to show you how to, I cannot explain this here.

For a long time, DVDShrink has been something like the de facto standard for free DVD ripping. And you can still use the current legal version, if the DVD is not copy protected in the first place.
