Routing loop after moving mail box

We moved some mail boxes from current server to another new server. After we updated the user profile in address book and sent a test mail to the user’s mail box on the new server. We got a “routing loop” error message. However, if we waited for 5 to 10 minutes, it would be OK.

Does the domino server keep some cache on the routing? Can we refresh that and make the new routing take effect immediately? Please advise.

thanks,

Sunny

It sounds like the Domino Directory hadn’t replicated between the servers before the test mail was sent. That means that the users old server thinks the user has moved to the new server, but the new server still thinks the user is on the old server, so they just bounce the mail between them until the max hops is reached.

If you use the AdminP to move the user, a replica of the mail file will be created on the new server, it will replicate, and the user document will be changed in an orderly fashion. When the move is complete, the old mail file can be removed.

I think Peter hit this one squarely on the head. The directory is the key, replicate it manually if you want this to happen quickly. There may still be a window where cached information could put you in a routing loop but it’s a lot less likely than waiting for scheduled replication.

You can actually Move users with AdminP even if you have replicas on the new server already, but in that case, especially if you’re moving a lot of users, I would recommend updating their profiles (quickly, use an agent to do multiples if you must!) and then forcing replication as soon as you’ve made those changes. Do it after hours if you’re real concerned about someone sending mail after you’ve made the change, but before you can replicate…
