Router : The server is not responding

Hi,

I have from time to time this type of error message :

“No messages transferred to SUD.BANQUEPOPULAIRE.COM (host www.banquepopulaire.fr) via SMTP: The server is not responding. The server may be down or you may be experiencing network problems. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists.”

It goes on …until I restart the router !

Any idea ?

NB :

Different destination, different, senders, different Notes servers nothing special about the email.

No DMZ, no firewall, no internal DNS, no nothing

Thanks.

Jean-Pierre

Subject: antivirus?

I had that sort of nightmare a few years ago with domino 6.0 and windows server 2000.It was due to the antivirus we had on the server, uninstalled and the problem desappeared for ever.

Subject: NAV

I deactivated NAV but no change…

Thanks for your help.

Subject: I had to uninstall and reboot

We had McAfee and deactivating wasn’t enough. We completely removed the product and rebooted the server, I mean windows 2000 server not only Domino (or the router only…)

Just sharing our experience.

Subject: DNS & router timeout settings

Probably the IP address/DNS entry for that domain changed. So, Domino pulled the entry at the old IP address, and is getting a ‘not responding’. When you restart the router, it pulls the IP from DNS again, and this time gets the new one, and is able to deliver the message.

This should happen rarely, as most companies aren’t swapping around their email server IP addresses a lot.

Also, you can add MailTimeoutMinutes=120 to your notes.ini to make a message timeout sooner - in this case after 2 hrs - instead of sitting there trying to route for the default 24 hrs.
