Roaming users on single-user installation?

We have 100+ users, most with their “own” PCs, all PCs are running Windows 2000, and we use Notes (5.0.9) for e-mail, calendar, and to-do only. There are some that share PCs (not necessarily the same PC each time) and, in the past, we have used Location settings in able for them to each access their personal Notes information. Each user has to log onto a PC, they don’t share a generic login. We have one Domino server.

With Notes 6.0.1, we have the option of upgrading them to single or multi-user installations (client/PC) as well as roaming or not users. From what I have read, a multi-user installation creates a data directory for each user. If the users of that PC are all roaming users, will their personal data be replicated down to their individual data directory? What if a roaming user wants to use that PC, has a Windows account on that PC, but doesn’t have a data directory on that particular PC?

If the PC is set up as a single-user installation but used by roaming users, I am assuming the replication down when they start Notes will promise them their individual preferences so why have multiple data directories (just use one that gets updated when each user wants to get into Notes) considering our limited use of the Notes client? Can I install a single-user installation and have multiple roaming users be able to use the PC (at different times)?

From a previous post (http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd6forum.nsf/55c38d716d632d9b8525689b005ba1c0/e9bef771e9c9bb5185256c7d0065ea91?OpenDocument

), ”Multi user does not support having your data files on a file server.” Is this true? If so, can a multi-user installed client even support a roaming user or does the replication on start-up satisfy this condition (putting the files locally instead of one the server)?

Thank you.

Subject: Roaming users on single-user installation?

Greetings, You can use Roaming Profiles on a single user installation but it extremely ugly!! Whenever a roaming user sits at a single user installation machine, their replicated names.nsf and bookmarks.nsf replace the existing user’s names and bookmarks. Not good!! Imagine I am a roaming user and I inadvertantly sit at someone else’s desk. I can wipe out their address book with a single sign on. It doesn’t even prompt you with this knowledge. When you use the multi-user installation on XP or 2000, it will put their names.nsf and bookmarks.nsf into their \Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data foler. My advice is to only use Roaming Users for individuals that do not have a home computer and will be using a workstation that where numerous users will access Notes. Make sure it is a Windows 2000 or XP machine and then install the Multi-User installation.
