I’ve had a good read around all the roaming documentation but cannot find anything that indicates what happens when a Notes client starts up and you are a roaming user.
Lets say I am a roaming user and sit down at a machine for the first time where Notes has already been used by someone else. I launch Notes and I am then presented with the user name / password dialog. Obviously, I’ve never even launched Notes at this workstation before so my ID file isn’t available to select. All I can do if my ID file isn’t there is Exit Notes.
I would have thought that there should be an option to say “I am a roaming user” but there isn’t.
So, does anyone know how the client is supposed to deal with this?
Logically, the correlation between nomadic users and shared PCs is so high that, as David points out, you will nearly always combine the two, but it’s not a technical requirement. Roaming and multiuser are independent, complementary features:
Multiuser is a per-computer configuration option chosen during installation that lets every user logged into the PC share common files (help, templates, desktop icons, &c.) while protecting personal data using NOS security; Roaming is an administrative designation set per-user in the person document.
To let a user roam, you can either create the user as a roaming user during registration, or convert an existing user with the Roaming tool in the Admin client. In either case, the R6 client reads the roaming settings (if any) during authentication with the R6 home server, and replicates the user’s roaming files (personal address book, bookmarks, journal, maybe others I’ve forgotten) with the Roaming server specified in the user’s person record.
A roaming user can use a single install client with one major caveat, the cleanup options DO NOT take effect if the client is not a multi-user installation.

Not if you are using Notes Client 6.0.1 (not the earlier version) or later that was installed/set up to support multi-users. Behind the scenes, this version of Notes client detects if the User name you type on the logon screen is a roaming user (by comparing the roaming information in the person document on the server). The ID is attached to the person document, so you do NOT need to carry the ID around. Depending how the roaming is set up, when you log off, the cleanup process on the client can run automatically.
You cannot do roaming from Designer or Admin client.

Hi, Your post is very interesting and I was sure this could solve my roaming problem…Anyway, I still have no connection opportunities with my roaming users.
My users’ windows account isn’t the same than the short user name in Notes.
Has this to be the same ? Must the windows user name match exactly with the name in the “short name” field in the user’s document ?

PS: I newly installed a multi-user notes on a machine and it doesn’t seem to be different to the “normal” one (no possibility to enter another name than the ones found via the id files in the data directory of my local installation)

The logon screen is similar (I can’t remember exactly), but under the covers there are extra steps that check if the user has been tagged as a roaming user.You will see it in action. It’s pretty cool. I recommend that you have two roaming users; one with the cleanup enabled and the other without. See what happens to the files/directories on your PC ;-).
Also observe something new in the “People” view in your Domino directory.
