Restore on mail in a cluster

Hello! I am new to Domino Clustering, and have a question on restoring a mailfile from tape to the cluster.

We quite often have to restore a mailfile from tape because of lost messages, etc. Before clustering we would just restore it into a restore folder on their Domino server, and then the user could copy/paste from the restored file.

But now it would seem that if we used this same approach and put it in a restore folder on the cluster, the restored file would have the same replica ID, which would mean that the cluster replicator would find it, and try and make all replicas of the mailfile the same again, resulting in the documents missing again.

Can anyone tell me if my theory is correct? or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance – Don

Yes this is what might happen. It’s always tricky to put DBs with the same replica ID on the same server. You will never have a problem unless you start replicating with that server.

Maybe you can put the DB somewhere else outside the data dir and make a Notes copy onto the server or place it on a network share and disable replication. There are no standard tools to do something like that.

What about this… Can I create a mail/restore folder, and disable cluster replication on that folder? Will the contents then be disabled because the folder is disabled?

Well, to answer my own question, yes and no. If there are files in that folder when replication is disabled/out of service, it seems to work. But if a file is added to that folder, it does not inherit the out of service attribute. Oh well! Any other ideas? Thanks…Don

Hi Don,

I generally disable replication for the restored database only. (When the replica is open in lotus notes File - Replication - Setting - On the Other tab select “temporary disable replication for this replica.”
