On one location we went from one server to two clustered servers. When users replicate with a cluster do we need to create one connection document for each server?
The administration help states that other servers that replicate with a cluster should use the cluster name in the connection document. This is not possible for clients, they will not find path to server.
What is the best way to update users so they replicate with the cluster and not the “old” server only? Is it possible to update clients via policy ?

We are not using hosts files, and it looks like we have to set up connection documents to both servers. Our clients are only able to find the server with connection document. Without a connection document to the new server in the cluster as well, it does not failover to the other server. They are not using the new server for load balancing either, even when the first server is available.
On clients were we have seperate connection documents to each server both failover and load balancing works fine.
We will therefore create a script to make an extra connection document for our clients.

users don’t replicate with a cluster they replicate with their home mail server. If their home mail server is not available then they will fail over to the cluster automatically. The client has the cluster members stored in a file called cluster.ncf; this is how it knows what servers are members of each cluster.

Do the user need a separate connection document with the address of both servers in the cluster, and if this is the case is there a way to distribute this by policy?
As it is now the clients did not find the address to the new server when the old server was taken down. They have a connection document to the old server, but not to the new one.
My question is really what is the best way to update clients so they will fail over properly in the cluster.

connection docs are not required if your company uses DNS to resolve IP addresses. You can also use a hosts file for this. If you don’t use DNS or a hosts file then you will need a connection doc to at least 1 server in your domain so that the client can connect and retrieve IP addresses from the server docs in your names.nsf.
