We currently have two clustered mail servers, Mail1 and Mail2. Mail1 is running on hardware 8 years old and low disk space and needs to be put down.
I have stood up a new server to take over for Mail1. I have called it Mail3 and it is now part of the cluster.
What is stopping me from shutting all of the servers down and renaming the new Mail3 server to Mail1 and pulling the plug. I would modify all connection doc and other configurations of course. The advantage is that I dont have to worry about users location documents and having to reconfigure other outside domino peripherals that point to a server named Mail1 such as the copy machine.
The other admins would point the ip address of Mail1 to Mail three and do all the postini and smtp configurations.
Same OS? As a preparation, I’d do a full replication between the servers, “tell adminp process all” on each server and then replicate a final time. I’d also do a decommission server analysis between Mail1 and Mail3 before pulling the plug to make sure you hadn’t missed anything.
Power down both Mail1 and Mail3. Move Mail1’s server ID and Notes.ini to Mail3. Modify notes.ini if you had any IP addresses that may have changed. Start the new Mail1 and you should be good.
that makes it even easier. I didnt think about just moving the ini and .id files over. I was going to rename the server document and every other instance of the server name. That prob would of failed since the id files certificates still would of said Mail3
