Renaming a Domino server?

I have a Domino server running on iSeries. I want to rename this server by register a new server and a copy of the notes.ini of the existing server (edit and change the server name, for example, servername=, mailserver=, location=, and so on, …)

The new server name is explicitly in the ACL or in the "localdomainservers: group, with the group name in the ACL of all databases needed (such as names.nsf, admin4.nsf, and so on).

After bringing the server up with the new server id and notes.ini the old server name did not change to the new server name and the server status stayed *Starting instead of *Started.

Can anyone tell me how can i solve this problem?

Thanks

You have to ask yourself the question; What is the need to rename my server?

I think there is no way to rename a server, as a Domino server relates to a ID file. If you rename the ini etc, still the server is starting using the id file of server B.

You are better off bringing server B up in the domain, move the users/apps to server B, make server B the admin server for your domain and dismantle server A after this is done.

If renaming domino is a cause of renaming the OS servername, no problems there, because OS name is NOT related to Domino name.

good luck.

Hi Michel,

Thank you for your respones.

I will explain what i really want.

Suppose you have 2 severs A & B and each running on a separate iSeries partition.

Server A is going to be a production server & server B is backup. The 2 are replication of each other.

When server A is down, the server B will take over by using the server id & notes.ini of server A.

But the problem is that after bringing the server B up with the server id & notes.ini of server A, the server name A did not change to the server name B and the server status stayed *Starting instead of *Started.

Do you have any idea how to get this working ?

Right, now i get the picture. I agree with Ian…Don’t…But if you are as subborn as i, i will tell you what i would do…

Keep the running system with replication as is…Replicate ALL.

Keep a copy of the notes.ini and server ID of server A and keep it up to date (create a batch copy every week, might as well keep a copy of server id and notes.ini of server B)

IF server A goes down, save the serverB copy of notes.ini and server ID, replace those 2 from server A -the safe copy, as the server is down- to server B, while domino is down, offcourse. Startup server B, which will be server A then and you are back until last replication.

Just NOTE 1 important thing: The installation NEEDS to be the same (same program folder, same data folder location etc, or your server will not run…)

Have fun…

Oh, yeah, test this on 2 PC computers…i know it works, but you need to know how it works and you do not want to do this on a live system…

have fun !

Visit http://www.binarytree.com/domains to review CMT for Domains from BinaryTree. They can rename servers.
