Removing nsf files from the Server

Hi from a rookie - 7 days into Notes Admin ! I’m looking for some advice regarding removing obsolete nsf mailfiles from the server - when I go into the directory to cut/paste the files into an “archive directory” to backup later it tells me that the file is in use by another person/program (I guess it’s being continually polled by Notes). Is there a way of “cutting the connection” so I can move the file out ? We have over 1,000 mailfiles - and so so many of them are obsolete (people who left years ago !!)

Subject: Recommend Domino Administration Client

Always try to do you files moves and other database operations (Delete, new replica) using the Domino Administration Client … From the Files Panel after selecting the file use the Move Database Tool on the right panel… Selected same server and different directory… There will be other options for leaving redirect files to update any Notes Client references if you are using 8.0 or greater but for your use case I can assume no need… This will generate and Adminp request on the server and will be performed in the background… Actually creates new replica in the destination directory and when done generates and Adminp Request for Admin Approval to delete the source… You then have to approve that request and then Adminp will delete the source…

Optionally, you could bring the Domino server down and perform the move at the OS Level and bring the Domino Server Back up… If you have things like DAOS enabled this will cause you DAOSCAT.NSF to get out of sync and you’ll need to resync…
