Completely deference it. Remove it from every view formula, form formula, column formula, delete it from every document, etc.
Then compact. Last time I had this issue it worked for me, but the version of LNotes I was using at the time was R3.

Should still work the same. Obviously a tool like TeamStudio Analyzer and/or configurator or DDSearch is pretty helpful here.
Since Notes 5.0.6 (I think) it should be safe to enable the advanced database property “Allow more fields in database”, which should make it rather unlikely to hit the max. fields limit. I haven’t done any comparisons, but I never found any hint, that this setting had a negative impact on performance in any way.
