I would like to know if Lotus/IBM gave some recommandations about the maximum size of a mailbox.

What are recommandations ?
What kind of problem will be encoutered if the size of a database is greater than this recommandation ?

It depends on many factors, like computer memory, disk space, bandwidth, # of open sessions…
But basically, the less size the better it is.
If there are too many documents, views indexing will become slower. If you have many mails with attachments, your bandwidth will suffer.
Maybe you can control their size by using quotas, or by compressing attachments that are the main source of size consumption. Check www.mk-net-work.com for good compression tools.
