Rebuilding a Server

Hi, from your experience, are there any potential adverse affects when rebuilding the server on the SAME box, using the SAME IP but a different NetBIOS name?

Any problems I should be prepared for if I rebuild using a different NetBIOS name, or should it be seamless?

Thanks

You don’t really need NETBIOS. Use only TCPIP and find your server thru DNS. To rebuild you just reinstall the soft and then copy your backup of server.id, names.nsf. All other system files can be rebuild from scratch (yeah I know it’s not very clean but it works). You should restore the users’ mail files as well (they’ll enjoy that)…

You don’t need NETBIOS and DNS, just use TCPIP and connection documents. Works much better over global connections, as DNS servers have often only a local namespace, plus with connection documents you can make passthru connections when there is no TCPIP route to another server.

You are right with Notes clients but there is no connexion docs for DWA… You do need DNS for them (unless you prefer HOSTS files !)

Isn’t DWA just a web enabled mail database? It shouldn’t have anything to do with Domino Server connection documents.

Well if you have a server you probably also have some clients… Your clients can find the server by :NETBIOS (bad plan)

TCPIP and HOSTS file (bad plan)

TCPIP and connexion docs (OK for Notes)

TCPIP and DNS (OK for Notes and DWA)

In any case, going back to the beginning of this thread, you never need NETBIOS.

Thanks Mika and Olivier.

I wasn’t sure if the notes.ini referenced the Computer Name (NetBIOS) name somewhere.
