Rant : IBM Technotes

Rant on…

This morning i’ve read this technote (Yeah, i’m a freak i read technotes every day)

Log Analysis searches only the Miscellaneous Event view in Domino

Question You set up log analysis on a Domino® server by selecting File → Tools → Server Administration, clicking on the Servers button and selecting Log Analysis. After entering the criteria for the search, the output is sent to a log analysis database called loga4.nsf.
NOTE: The contents of this database are overwritten if the database already exists and a new database is created if one does not already exist.

The log analysis seems to only contain data from the Miscellaneous Events view. Can other views be searched?

Answer The log analysis feature only searches the Miscellaneous Events view for its data. Other views cannot be searched.

That’s fine, the tool cannot search in other views.

It’s frustrating to see answer like that, tools or workarounds DO exist.

From the SandBox

From OpenNtf

Tool to search log.nsf database

It’s same thing with this technote:

How to track down where replication changes originate

IBM suggest to track down manually each server and eventually identify a user’s name. Depending on the number of servers in the environment, this may be an extensive search.

Again free tool exist, why don’t they link to those tools?

Tool to find Old documents pushed back by replication

I have already written an email to the technote’s team about this last one, without any news since then…

I know, nobody is gonna die but it makes me…arghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Rant Off

Thank you,

You expect a large company to point (suggest) people go to/use a product they didn’t develop or support and therefore open themselves up to a possible lawsuit?

Next you’ll expect people to know Coffee is Hot and if they spill it on themselves they might get burned.

Beyond my day job I volunteer for a Not-For-Profit and current I am the President of the corporation. I have to bite my tongue everyday because someone may take what I say out of context and open us up to a lawsuit. It’s often the case, the less you say the better.

I know, but they can add stuff like they do if a few technotes

IMPORTANT NOTE: The above is a sample script, provided only to illustrate one way you can approach your troubleshooting. IBM Lotus Support does not support this script and will not be able to customize it for a customer’s specific configuration.

or like when you want to downlad a database from the SandBox., there is a disclaimer

Jean-Yves,

Thank you for the feedback. It is most likely that the engineer who wrote the Technote was unaware of the tools you’ve mentioned. You can always add comments to the Technote to identify tools applicable to the content. If you do not receive a response, please feel free to contact me at chads@us.ibm.com, and I will submit the needed updates.

JYR:

I think that IBM walks a fine line in recommending 3rd party sites. Why they don’t reference their own Sandbox should be apparent from the lack of new items in it.

Further, I believe that we (the consumers of their products) should be more aware of our options. While Chad has graciously provided a feedback loop, I don’t think that educating all of the people that write TechNotes as to where people, like us, can look for possible solutions will happen. But, I know that nearly every year at Lotusphere, there is a session on OpenNTF. That surprises me, in that I have always thought that it was well known.

The more I think about this, the more I believe that we are not “normal” users of the product or the TechNotes.
