We are in the planning phases of our upgrade from an all R5 environment to R8. We are going to step the servers to R6.5x then R8.x.
I need to know if there are any known issues with running the R5 client in conjunction with R8 servers? We don’t want to have to upgrade our desktops twice and were hoping that we could deploy R8 on the servers then rollout R8 on the desktop once all the servers were up to date.

Unfortunately, if you call support, they will recommend that you upgrade both your clients and servers to 6.5.x, then 8, due to the fact that 5 is not supported.

I’ve went through this recently, you should upgrade the client to R8 first and the server after that. Because R5 client can’t open a R8 mailbox if you create any new user in R8 server.
Also make sure all your clients have at least 1Gb of RAM.

We do not use Notes for mail. Out environment is an application only infrastructure. That is the reason I was thinking that we could get away with the client running 5 and the servers at 8. We are not going to implement the new ODS until all the clients are updated. We would remain at ODS 41 until then.
