Since upgrading to R8 client I find that when I do a ‘Reply with History’ to an external smtp adddress the mail received at the other end (eg. in Outlook / html mail client / etc) displays a little placeholder (square with a red X) approx where the letterhead graphic would be in the Notes reply with history.
This looks quite bad at the other end, especially in Outlook. I can reproduce it if I reply with history from R8 over SMTP to an external Notes R7 client. When the external R7.0.2 client replies with history back to me the problem doesn’t happen - suggesting it’s an issue introduced with R8).
If I look at the html for what’s received at the remote end, from an R8 reply with history, I can see an img tag as follows:
.
This img tag appears in the same position that I can see the Notes letterhead graphic, or collapse section graphic, half way down in my sent reply, but the actual 32 char hex string changes each time so it’s not simply a reference to the graphic!!
I did a test to someone at another company who is using R8 and their reply with history back to me shows the same problem.
BTW, it happens when the mail is sent directly to the internet from the Notes client (R8.0.2), or when sent via the Notes mail server (R8.0.1).
If someone can confirm that they don’t get this with R8.0.2, that would be a big help, as it would mean it must be a config issue. On the other hand, if someone can confirm that this is an R8 ‘feature’ then that’s also a help.
What version Mail template are you using? (you will find this by selecting File/Application/Properties on your Mail database, on the 4th tab of the infobox.
Do you happen to have Designer installed? If so, could you please check to see if you have a form called SimplifiedReply in your mail file?
Debbie, I set up a test smtp server and sent mail through it to the R8 smtp server from an Outlook Express client. When I do a reply with history in this test setup the subform ‘SimplifiedReply’ seems to be used and all is well!! I can’t see what determines whether the SimplifiedReply is used. Have to leave it now, and will test again later and will post results. Thanks
Found two mails from the same external sender. When I composed a reply with history to one of the mails the ‘SimplifiedReply’ subform was used, and all was good.
When I composed a reply with history to the other mail, it did not use the ‘SimplifiedReply’ but included the original mail in a collapable section with a Notes letterhead type header (graphic, from, to, subject). It is this type of reply that goes out to external recipients with the missing graphic!!
The mail where the reply with history used the ‘SimplifiedReply’ subform had the ‘form’ field set to ‘Memo’.
The mail where the reply with history did not use the ‘SimplifiedReply’ did Not have a ‘form’ field on the document.
The pattern seems to be that mails arriving via the Notes SMTP server do get a ‘form’ field put on the document. However mails that are retrieved from an external POP3 server by the Notes client don’t have a ‘form’ field. It is replies with history to these POP3 originating mails that have the problem. The problem occurs both when the mail is sent back out directly to the internet from the Notes client, and when sent out via the Notes mail server.
So, to reproduce
Set up the R8.0.X Notes client to retrieve POP3 mail
Get an external Outlook client to send mail to this POP3 address
Retrieve the mail using Notes client
Notice that there is no ‘Form’ field on incoming mail document
Compose a Reply with History and notice the collapsed section containing the incoming mail, and the letterhead style of the header.
Send the reply with history back out
Notice on the external mail client the placeholder for the missing graphic.
Workaround: A one line agent to set the Form field to ‘memo’ on the incoming mail before doing the reply with history!!
Thanks, Richard. The “missing Form field” comment in your post was enough to tickle my memory of an existing SPR in our system (bug ID MYAG7FCPGX). This was written up awhile back and fixed in the 8.5 release.
