In an mixed environment, should the R6 server allow to replicate the names.nsf’s design elements ? If so, is it still possible to orderly read the address book an R4 servers ?

NO. That answer is true as well for R5. You can replicate to R4 but don’t do anything higher than editor access to the R4 address book.
