Hi to all.I’ve one Domino R5 server (application and mail server).
I would like to take advantage of R6 anti-spam and mail jounaling new functions BUT without upgrading from R5 to R6 (not soon, at least!).
So my question is:
if I deploy a new server R6 version, as front-end of my R5 primary server, but without any mailboxes (R5 is the mailserver),
may I take advantage of anti-spam (mail in input) and mail journaling (output email) WITHOUT a R5 upgrade?

No.
But why one earth would you want to, even if you could? There is no reason not to upgrade your primary server now to D6, given that it is now up to it’s 3rd maintenance rev, and is officially one version behind the latest stuff.

The reason is simple, it’s just to take time.
On my R5 server there are some apps and third-part tasks that are not still certified for R6, at least officially.
In the mean time, I would like to take advantage of R6 new mail functionality…

Then if you’re willing to put in a second server, migrate your mail to the new server and leave the apps and 3rd party stuff on the old one.

…has chosen to deploy a new ND6.5 external SMTP server, mainly for using RBL blacklisting etcetera. But they kept their internal apps/mailserver on R5 for now, because of some applications that need to be thoroughly tested before migrating them to ND6.5.
An R5 server can use an ND6.5 Domino Directory design, so that’s not a problem too.

I’ve verified that using R6 as a SMTP server front-end is ok, even if mailboxes stay on the the R5 server:
R6 mail rules work and even mail journaling… (but the test was done using a primary R6 server as a front-end).
How is R6.5 server ? Is it too memory/cpu intensive (sametime…) ?

Remember, the IM integration is client-side, you don’t run sametime on the ND6.5 box. That’s not going to eat resources.
I’m running ND6.5 at home on a 445 mhz PIII, 196MB RAM machine and it works ok, but I wouldn’t advice that if you’re going to receive more than one email message per minute

You’re not going to be journalling mail that is exchanged between your users in that configuration. You’ll only retain mail that comes through the gateway in its routing. Same with rules.
