I need to upgrade R5 Clients to R6 and I want to keep the users workspace and settings. is there any special way I should do this or is it a over the top install?

How are you doing the upgrade, locally machine by machine? or by a scripted software push?
If you are doing a straight install “over the top”, eg form the CD, then your settings will be preserved.
Although dektop5.dsk becomes desktop6.ndk and same with the cache.dsk. The design of the names,nsf gets upgraded etc etc.
When in doubt back up the users data directory, and all should be sweet.
There is obvioulsy lots of documentation form IBM/Lotus about upgrade paths. Check it out.

It keeps nothing when I do this. I am going machine by machine. 5.11 is installed in the default c:\lotus\notes path and I install the R6 the same path. I then run Notes and it wants me to reset up all information. Will this also mean the will lose there workspace layout?

Nothing? Not even the desktop and local database and userid files? Are you using the Client CD from Lotus?

Are you talking about the custom welcome screen prompt and/or things like webmail and usenet?

I downloaded the client. The ID is still on machine but I need to reenter all the server information, name and the other services. When In I have none of the workspace settings.

Just a thought…
Are you choosing single user install or multi-user install. If you use single-user install it should ask you for the locations of both the program and data directories and an install over top should work just fine.
If you happen to be choosing the multi-user install option then it is maybe installing new data files in an alternate location and that is why you dont have any of your settings

I had exactly the same problem with Notes 6.x not recognising an existing Notes 5.x installation.Re-installing Notes 5.0.11 first (over the existing Notes 5.0.11) helped. After this the installer for Notes 6.x was working as expected.

it’s worth checking the registry to see if
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\5.0\Path
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\5.0\DataPath
are as you expect them to be. These get set during install

Ok, I am actually running Windows 2000 so when installing it put the users data files under there local settings when they logged in, not to the c:\lotus\notes\data directory. But it will still not show the org. workspace with all the tiles they have.

The Multi User Install is only on the “Client Only” Install Disk. IE Administrator and Designer are not avalailable at all for selection.
It looks like you have customised the Data Directory Path.
During the CD/Network install for 6.x you should have had an option to select the Program Files Directory and the Notes\Data Directory. Did you change the Data Directory to match?
It sounds like you should however hust down the “Client Only” install disk, and go for the Multi User Option, thereby enabling you to take adnatage of the Windows Profiles for the Data directory per machine. Beware though, if you use W2K/NT Roaming profiles, all local replicas a user takes will have to be additionally sync’d back to their home servers. That could be a lot of data.
That option (IMHO) is only any good for user that hot desk and share PC’s.

Is that really true? I thought the point of putting the user-specific data in “C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data” rather than “C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data” was that it didn’t roam with the NT/W2K user profile.
This thread seems to say specifically that you need to make some registry and Notes.ini hacks to get the multi-user install to use W2K roaming.
I admit that I’m no W2K profile expert, so advice would be welcome. In the environments at some of our clients we might end up using different roaming solutions for different sites.

I have 5.08 installed right now. It uses c:\lotus\notes\data for the ID’s and NSF’s. Now when I install 6.02Cf over top it installes the main files in c:\lotus\notes but then creats a Folder under c:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\and then the users in the c:\lots\notes director does not get upgraded. If I move the Bookmark folder to the new directory created by 6.02 it will still not show the org. workspace tiles…Does this mean when I upgrade all my systems It will not save users settings or org. workspace?

I’m not sure I have the full answer to your question. And I’m a bit unsure what you mean by “the org. workspace tiles”. If that’s the workspace as stored in desktop5.dsk, then I believe the answer is that it will be upgraded to desktop6.ndk if desktop5.dsk is present in the user’s data folder at the point when they are setup up for Notes 6.
If it’s Bookmarks that you’re talking about then the file that needs to be ‘seeded’ is bookmark.nsf.
There’s some discussion of something similar here:
If you are thinking of using roaming as well, then that adds another layer of complexity/possibility. It seems like by converting users to roaming at the right point you can have Notes handle all the user-specific stuff. The downside is that you’d probably have to run the install twice on each machine (first single-user, then multi-user). And that probably outweighs the benefit of not copying data to local profiles.
I’ve put up a draft procedure here for a roaming migration. It’s probably unnecessarily complex, so I’m waiting for some guru to point out the flaws:

I have it all running correctly and it is pointing to the users data directory. It seem sto do alot of changes to the bookmarks file but I still cant see the “workspace” tiles. It just shows a few like the mail, addressbook…With 5.08 the pages have alot of tiles on them that I dont want to have to readd for each install.

If You upgraded from notes R5 to R6 You can still use the old desktop5.dsk file in your notes 6 client by changing the name of the file desktop5.dsk to desktop6.ndk and replacing the existing one (created during R6 installation)with this old renamed one. This database should be located in your data-directory.
