Question on where/what to buy

Hello:

I have an application for a new client that is very well suited to Notes/Domino. The trouble is I have been out of the loop for a while and am not sure what to recommend.

This will be a custom app for only 5 users that interfaces with a SQL database. I’m interested to know what server software I will need. I would like to run on SBS 2003 if possible. I don’t need the mail functionality, as they already use Exchange.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Check out Domino Express-Otherwise Domino Application server should do the trick,

Best bet is to get an IBM reseller to show you the new options that Domino 8 has introduced.

My go would be either express or the one license of the enterprise server, as this would allow emails to go out if the workflow app requires it.

An Enterprise license is definitely NOT required to send emails from applications. That would be complete overkill. It is ONLY needed to have individual mail files on a server, that should serve custom applications as well.

This is the Domino Licensing start page:

setting up a Notes environment for 5 users to connect to an existing SQL db sounds a bit overkill, no? Especially if you’re not going to use mail. Can’t you use some of their existing stuff to build a web interface or something? John

Overkill because of what? The only potential problem I see would be about administration. But companies spend money on consultants for administering other systems as well …
