I want to query an external Domino application that is open to the public with no authentication required. I know you can query domino directories, address books etc. but wondered if you could query a custom database using LDAP or something else.
Once I can successfully query from Domino to Domino, I need to initiate queries from a Cold Fusion server, gathering data from the open Domino database to present back in a Cold Fusion website.

Well, the standard methods for querying Domino databases from within another Domino database are @dblookup, @dbcolumn, and the getDocument, getAllDocumentsByKey methods of LotusScript and Java. These only work from within Domino, of course. There are solutions out there for Cold Fusion that I have seen (query here on Cold Fusion and Google Cold Fusion and Domino). I have never really worked with CF except to tinker, but your best bet is probably going to be returning XML from the domino database and parsing it in CF. How you would do this depends on what you need to return from the Domino database.

Check the Domino Designer help file for URL syntax for searching.URL search support is pretty comprehensive. Here’s an example;
http://www.mercury.com/products.nsf/By+Product+Number/?SearchView&Query=PC156&SearchOrder=3&SearchMax=1&SearchFuzzy=TRUE&SearchWV=FALSE
I work in a mixed CF/Domino environment and they have used this method to retrieve Domino data to ColdFusion.
